Ross's Goose mixed in with Snow Geese
Sometimes an occasional Ross's Goose can be spotted among the Snow and Blue Geese.
During the day there are times when the entire flock at the refuge takes to the air for a time and then returns. The timing of this is unpredictable but it will happen eventually, and can be a time for interesting flight and or landing shots.
As midday turns to afternoon, the activity of the geese seems to increase as they prepare for the evening roost. Sunset occurs behind some large mountains to the west many minutes before official sunset.
Snow geese are legally hunted beginning somewhere around the 10th of October, but this date changes yearly. It seems that hunting season results in more day time confinement to the refuge area by the geese from mid month on. Prior to hunting season the geese are more likely to be seen feeding in fields outside of the refuge.
Early morning is the least crowded every day of the week, and weekdays are generally less crowded than weekends. When the geese are close to the goose viewing area it can be very crowded. For a map of Dead Creek click here.
