Digiscoping with the Coolpix 5400

The Televue 40mm Plössl eyepiece attached to the
Swarovski AT80HD scope gives an unvignetted
zoom range of 19.7mm to 24mm which is a 35mm
equivelant of about 1100mm to 1335mm. More
important to me is the fact that it can be zoomed out
all the way to wide angle for locating the bird, then
zoomed back out to a longer focal length for the shot.

The robin to the left was taken at a distance of about
25 feet, and  is uncropped and downsized. The
Coolpix 5400 with the Televue 40mm Plössl eyepiece
is capable of taking large in the frame full resolution
bird photographs if you are close enough to the bird.

To align the camera to the eyepiece I use the slide
copier adapter for the Coolpix 5400 which screws
into the camera body. I just removed the front face by
sanding which leaves the end of the cylinder the same
diameter as the Televue 40mm Plössl eyepiece. It also
allows the full zoom range of the camera to be used
uninhibited.
I then placed the modified slide copier adapter
against the eyepiece and secured it in position
with a thick rubber pipe connector secured with
pipe clamps, not too tight around the eyepiece or
the slide copier adapter.

The American Robin to the right was taken at a
distance of about 30 feet and is uncropped and
downsized. American Robins are about 10
inches in length.
